Cortez Hill is a section of San Diego that is rich in history and also has many newer attractions to draw people in. This area was named after the El Cortez Hotel, one of the historical hotels located in San Diego. This area is one of the oldest residential areas of San Diego, but don't let that scare you away. In 1992 the Redevelopment Agency went to great pains to revive this area by making it a more pedestrian area with a mix of residential and commercial use.
Sitting south of I-5 and north of downtown's core you will fine the Cortez Hill district. The 111 acres that make up these 2 neighborhoods makes it seem as one. On the east you will find the El Cortez condominiums that were previously touted as the El Cortez Hotel.
The area on the wet side of Sixth Avenue is known as Cortez west and is home to some of the original Victorian style homes that belonged to the first settlers. This area has beckoned to residents for over a 100 years.
In between these two residential areas you will find many shops and sidewalk cafes. Ash street provides a beautiful gateway to the waterfront. Because of it's height Cortez Hill offers beautiful vistas. You can see the urban area of San Diego, Boalboa Park, as well as the bay and the Pacific Ocean.
